The Smart, Impactful Reason Why More Food Banks Are Looking Like Grocery Stores

Nearly a million and a half people rely on food pantries in New York City, and Lugeily Duran is one of them. She was laid off from her job in a medical office and now works as a home health aide at night. She has a husband, who is jobless, and two small boys.

Duran, 29, is a bubbly, resourceful woman. She gets a small amount of food stamps, which buys food for one week out of each month. She also visits four different food banks, including St. John’s Bread and Life, in Bedford-Stuyvesant; it is Brooklyn’s largest food pantry.
